Ink in the Clink 2017 — A 3-Day Sentence at Shawshank

August 19, 2017

Rick Fields, the man behind IITC

Finishing up their third year, Ink in the Clink has made leaps to providing the Mid-Ohio area with a festival worth attending. A destination with a backdrop you won't find anywhere else. Still relatively new, but gaining a lot of attention, Ink in the Clink sits on 40 acres at one of the most notorious prisons made famous by many films. I think anyone who's anyone knows I don't need to throw out any hints to tell you where or what I'm referring. But in case you're still living in solitary and needing a handout, you'll find Ink in the Clink located at the Ohio State Reformatory, made famous by the 1994 hit, "Shawshank Redemption."

I was happy to be invited back by IITC to covering this 3-day long tattoo and music festival. Rick and Susan Fields, the people behind Ink in the Clink, amped up the entertainment by booking a solid lineup of rock/metal to ensure everyone was getting someone they wanted to see. When IITC announced their list this year, I had to start planning because many new AND bigger acts were on the horizon! The whole weekend was picture perfect for my camera, and this goes for anyone in attendance. Sunny skies hovered over the prison for the three-day festival.

I'm going to save my character count for this post about writing all the bands I captured this year. Rather than cover everyone (I don't think I have the stamina to finger punch my keyboard with all the acts), I will highlight each day, pick my winners of who stuck out and flash a daily gallery of all bands for each day. Everyone wins.

Day 1 (July 14th)

Things started off loud 'n heavy on day one at IITC. Two stages, side-by-side was the blueprint for all the acts. One band plays while the other set up. No dead air and continuous music all day long. Friday opened up with 14 regional and national groups which included performances by After the Ashes, Olathia, Bonesaw, Unsaid Fate, Otherwise, All that Remains, Mushroomhead, and In This Moment closing the evening.

WINNERS

Chris E. of Olathia

Olathia (Cleveland, OH) - My appearance was hindered on day 1, but arrived in the knick of time at 4:30 to see my second family crash the stage at 5:00. A straight melodic thrash metal band fronted by female vocalist, Chris E. who can stretch sweet harmonious tones down to thundering growls of rage that quaked the prison walls Friday evening. This was Olathia's first show in a few month span, but things really didn't miss a beat, especially with Terry Johnson as the band's newest man on bass battling out stage spotlight with Chris.

Otherwise (Las Vegas, NV) - It seems like whenever you get any band signed to Century Media Records, you're in for a treat. Not only is the high music enthusiastic, but their stage appearance is just as memorable as the songs they write. This was my first-time seeing or even hearing of Otherwise. As soon as Adrian Patrick entered the stage sporting a dark gray cloak-like hoodie (hood up), dangling red wristbands and the facial grins that represented, "shits about to get real," then the energy level quickly rose from the main stage. The man worked that stage and played into the hands of the audience getting them involved singing such hits as "Soldiers" and "Die For You." Expect to see the new material as their forthcoming album "Sleeping Lions" sets to drop at the end of next month.

Adrian Patrick of Otherwise

Mushroomhead (Cleveland, OH) - A favorite must-see for viewers residing in the northeast Ohio area. It's no surprise Mushroomhead were invited back for Ink in the Clink this year. The seven masked members are known for their avant-garde sound, and elaborate stage set-ups, headlined and shut down the second stage that night. Despite only having a few favorite hits I find myself listening to, the enjoyable part is watching them all collaborate and interact with the crowd. You don't get the full "Mushroomhead" experience until you see a few of the members jump ship and clash with you in the crowd. A personal favorite of mine are the two water drums set up on both sides of the stage which are Illuminated with lights inside the drums. So every hit is a burst of "hydro" color fun for my camera.

Jeffrey Nothing of Mushroomhead

Maria Brink of In This Moment

In This Moment (Hollywood, CA) - In This Moment won "Best of Show" for the weekend. Easily topping the other headliners and placing an exclamation point in every category. It really was no contest. Love or hate the music, you can't deny the fact this band controls the battlefield playing live.

Implementing stage aesthetics that work perfectly with the tone of their music. Everyone is in heavy makeup. Dark, ghoulish-like appearances that make you think twice meeting these guys alone in the woods. As you fix your attention to the middle of the stage, a different persona is exhibited. Maria Brink, the lead vocalist for ITM provides some of the heaviest vocal sounds to come out of a singer. The screams and cries she leaves set the tone to all her songs. The emotion is heavily pitted into your stomach from such hits as "Whore," "Big Bad Wolf," and "Sick Like Me." If you're not already sold, I haven't even gotten into the costume changes Maria switches into for most of her songs. Each song is heavily highlighted visually to showcase a story. The lights, thick fog that regularly encompasses the stages, all the way to her back up dancers tantalizing your eyeballs.

Day 2 (July 15)

The second day and was feeling good physically. Arrived at the prison early afternoon and was ready to get a full day of music in me. If yesterday was anything to set the tempo for Ink, day 2 surely didn't trail behind. With bands such as Starset, 10 Years, Motograter, September Mourning and Three Days Grace ending the night, there were no acts in between that chilled the vibe on Saturday.

WINNERS

Emily Lazar of September Mourning

September Mourning (Los Angeles, CA) - I really was anticipating photographing September Mourning the most for Ink in the Clink, and they didn't foil (naturally). September Mourning is considered a transmedia dark culture project created by Emily Lazar and Marc Silvestri. The visuals of Emily's character, September can be described as cryptically beautiful. Depicted as a fictional character in her novel where the central concept as this lovely grim reaper hybrid where she navigates the world of the living and the world of the dead, her human side possessing the empathy to give some human souls a second chance. As her moves tantalize your eyeballs back and forth, you'll begin to see her hands reach toward the crowd as if she's ready to take a few souls right there. The rest of her band dressed in all black attire, serve as her servant spirits. Attending to every move she makes. The only thing that would have made this set more memorable was seeing them play at a later time slot where the dark air and full stage lights could embrace this story fully. September, I will await your return to Cleveland and see your soul reaping continue. Amazingly great show!

Dustin Bates of Starset

Starset (Columbus, OH) - Starset, a cinematic rock band from the Columbus area, are already having a galactic year. Nominated for three awards and set to perform at this year's Loudwire Music Awards, and surpassing 1 billion views on Youtube for their music videos and user content. When I see images from other photographers shooting Starset live and hearing the hits already populated on the airwaves, I knew this would be a unique chance to add some great photos to my portfolio. Starset easily took control and grabbed first place on the main stage that day. Even beating out headliner, Three Days Grace. The only shame was not seeing them take that last spot and witnessing the lights involved in their spacesuits. All the electronics included during the show was highly meant for darkness. Hopefully, next time when they roll back here, I can get the full effect.

Motograter (Santa Barbara, CA) -  This band from Southern Cali took me by surprise and knocked the eyeliner off my face. Before their set, I was backstage waiting, scrolling through my photos and Matt, the guitarist for Motograter, approached me and introduced himself and the band. He mentioned I shouldn't miss this performance. So, my curiosity peaked wondering who these guys were. As Starset concluded, I walked behind the second stage to see black and white paint splattered everywhere over the pavement with a couple gallon bottles of the stuff laying out. I look up and I see 5 of the members standing around me splashed in the wet black paint with white tribal stripes marking their whole upper body. The big news involving Motograter was the filming of their music video, "Dorian" at the prison.

Motograter was given their name from the instrument they created and play. I don't know what the hell a "motorgrator" is, but apparently, it's designed with industrial cable and guitar pieces that create a unique bass sound.  August 11, the band released "Desolation" via EMP and the hit "Dorian" has already been peaking the mainstream charts. This is the band's first album since 2003.

James Legion of Motograter

Day 3 (Sunday)

Beatened and sunburnt, the finish line was on the horizon for the final day of Ink in the Clink. Sad, sad...yes. Weekends go by so damn fast and even quicker when you're enjoying yourself molded in the entertainment doing what you love. Day 3 brought on a slightly different tone from the previous two days. Bands such as Texas Hippie Coalition, Black Stone Cherry, and Shaman's Harvest, carried more of the southern sound. Theory of a Deadman closed out the evening and festival as the main headliner.

WINNERS

Caelan Gregory of Ignite The Fire

Ignite the Fire (Taneytown, MD) - Opening the main stage was a band that lives up to their name. The sun was shining and the heat from the stage most certainly heated up the crowd as the volume began to fill. Ignite the Fire fueled up sweet harmonious melodies and catchy guitar sweeps from Michael Nelson. Ignite the Fire are a tightly knitted and young rock band that has enormous potential to keep rising. Their five song EP entitled "Trial and Triumph" hits hard and a great jammer on a highway car ride. Check out and listen to "Breathe." It's a favorite that's on my Spotify playlist. How did they get the name "Ignite the Fire"? Well, I have a good idea. I think it first started with the drummer's hair! It was a pleasure seeing you guys, and please hook me up next time you are in Cleveland. Would love to come out and jam!

Shaman's Harvest (Jefferson City, MO) - Mixing rock and southern blues go hand-and-hand for Shaman's Harvest. A band I recently was introduced from my girlfriend. The band recently released their full-length CD entitled, "Red Hands Black Deeds" a few weeks after their performance at Ink in the Clink. So we got a few sneaks from the new album. Very exciting. Nathan Hunt (lead vocalist) walks out in blue denim, long curly hair and grasps his spined skeleton mic stand as the rest of the band walks with him to "Red Hands Black Deeds (Prelude)" and right into hard hitting "Broken Ones" from the new album as well.

Nathan Hunt of Shaman's Harvest

Big Dad Ritch of Texas Hippie Coalition

Texas Hippie Coalition (Denison, TX) - The baddest band of the festival goes to Texas Hippie Coalition. Frontman, Big Dad Ritch mindset was, "this is my stage, I'm here to f#ck shit up, and if you tell me otherwise, you're going to get one pissed off Texan on your hands." Not his exact words, but there was no filter for Big Dad Rich. Pressured to disband from the stage after they exceeded their time, his reply, "they're trying to tell us we gotta get off the stage. We were going to play one more song, but fuck 'em, we're playing two more." Labeled as "Red Dirt Metal," I think the term fits well with the band's songs. All attitude, grit, and piercing sound that any metal head won't hesitate to go a little south to appreciate.

"Dying Daze" Song Artwork Released

August 07, 2017

I've been keeping this piece under wraps now for about six months now. Flight 619 asked me to create the artwork for the newest ballad, "Dying Daze". Now that it's FINALLY complete, I can go public and share some insight on how I approach this project.

"Dying Daze", a slower, more intimate ballad from the perspective of someone who has passed on. The lyrics sung by lead vocalist, Dakota, describes a somber feeling of loneliness. Losing someone close. Yet they're gone, the message is to appreciate the time together with those close to your heart. For when they're gone, you know they are keeping a watching eye from above.

APPROACH
I asked the band to send me the lyrics to the song so I can get a feel of how I wanted to illustrate the song. It didn't take too long to grasp a concrete concept. Decided a gravesite as the subject would be most suitable. Now I needed the perfect setting.

LOCATION
This couldn't be just any graveyard/cemetery. It had to speak the tone of the song. I knew the perfect spot. A small and intimate cemetery in Olmsted Falls called Chestnut Grove Cemetery. My girlfriend introduced this resting site to me when we first met. It's safe to say it's her second home. Nestled back on the front lines of a forest edged by the Rocky River, the serene feeling here just creates the perfect backdrop for what I wanted.

THE SHOT
It was the end of February about 40 degrees out when I photographed this. My lovely girlfriend, Ashley opted to step in and be my model. We decided to use the flowers I got her for Valentine's Day and make them into a mini bouquet as she kneeled down. I set up my 6 ft ladder and with calm and steady hands, stood there on the top ledge where the warning sticker clearly tells you not to stand. Haha. Thankfully the Nikon D750 has a tilted LCD screen so I can view what's going on while holding the camera above my head. The vantage point you see here is from the perspective of the person looking down on Ashley. After the shoot, Ashley decided to lay flowers from her bouquet on the other gravestones at the cemetery. So sweet!

POST
The whole shoot, I ended up shooting around 45-50 frames. Ashley nailed it perfectly and made the shoot go by fast. It must have been that damn cold that kicked her into high gear! By the time I got home and uploaded the images onto my computer, now came the hard part. Picking that shot. Sometimes it is very hard.

After I "starred" my favorites, now I could start the fun part of whipping out my brushes laying down the strokes onto my canvas. Slightly desaturated the whole photo only leaving the flowers with more color, added curves, tones, rain, puddles, to add mood, and removed unnecessary shadows casted by myself and other surrounding trees.

FINAL
Adding in logos and the song title, it was final complete. I am very happy with the outcome. This was my first time creating an album/song cover while using my photography and applying my graphic design knowledge to make this piece come full circle. Here's the before and after below.

Photo Review: HELLYEAH @ House of Blues (Cleveland, OH)

July 22, 2017

Last Wednesday (July12), HELLYEAH headlined the House of Blues in what has been the best show I've covered at that venue. Take a step back a week before the show, I was denied by their label's PR to shoot the show. Some lame ass explanation on they didn't have anymore passes to hand out. So I reached out to the "Screamin' Demon" himself, Chad Gray, on social media and got a reply back. I was astonished to get a reply back a few hours later. His overall reply was I will hook you up, just make sure you grab some sick shots of me. About an hour before the show, I arrived at the venue and checked the box office for my media pass. Keeping my fingers crossed that Chad pulled through on his word, the woman at the box office checked the list, turned around and my stress levels immediately faded as she handed over my laminate. "SCORE!" I'd post a photo of it, but I can't out of respect to the band as it's not in my nature to show the pass during a current tour run.

There I am up on the front lines. Assuming there'd be a shit load of photographers. Nope, just a total of three and plenty of room to work my magic. The house music fades as the curtain rises from the stage. The scene goes dark as background music enters the venue. A couple flickers from the strobes and LED lights focus on the drum kit. Vinnie pops out from the kit to grace the crowd. All band members but one are now warming up in anticipation of the first song to hit. Chad busts out center stage on his pedestal, fake blood covering his whole face. At this point, he's right underneath me. A few drops of blood hit my forearm as I take aim and fire the first few shots of him. From this range, I can hear his voice inches from my face while his hair is slapping the top of my head. It's an unexplainable feeling to hear one of your favorite vocalists arm lengths away and you're there freezing a moment in time. The picture below can best describe my first-person experience.

It's hard to leave a HELLYEAH without a smile on your face and little tinnitus in your ears. They're definitely considered the super group of our generation that branched off from previous bands we loved. Their latest album, "Undeniable!" is solid from beginning to end. Let me put it this way, HELLYEAH can be considered a fine wine saturated in moonshine. They get better with age, but that bottle will still knock your ass off your feet.

Photo Review: VentanA “13 Year Anniversary Show” @ The Agora Ballroom

July 07, 2017

Artwork by Blind 7 Photography

A hot, stuffy Agora Ballroom surrounded by rowdy diehards came to celebrate VentanA's 13th Anniversary show on June 30th. This industrial metal band formed right here in Cleveland, decided there's no better way to reveal the dirty truth of society than spew it to their most loyal fans.

A black tarp with handwritten white letters reading, "Make America Hate Again" laid across the stage. The house music faded, the curtain dropped, and all band members entered into view equipped with dirty, broken gas masks and dressed up in black suits. From this point when the first song hit the speakers, I immediately felt my upper body compress...literally. The few fans from behind, rammed my body up against the stage leaving me helpless with no room to lift my camera. This sucked as I was a little fearful of my gear. I don't know if the tight shooting space or the pundit body odor from the guy behind me was worse. I've been in this position before, but this was a whole new level of real estate to work with. Pushing back and forth on the crowd to pop in a few shots was the only way I could do anything. Framing and waiting for key moments to arise were few and far between. Oh yeah, I forgot with the high energy from the crowd, the singer made sure to take advantage of it and jump on top of me, crowd surfing the first few rows. All the pushing and shoving, I could only stay up there for 3 songs before I ninja'd my way to the outer banks, maneuvering my way past the mosh pit.

I really thrive on these shooting situations. It's crazy, don't get me wrong. Thousand dollars worth of equipment grasping at my hands and fans giving little shits about what happens to me. Music drives us into a whole new monster and I love it! I know I'd be in full mosh mode if I had little to worry about.

After reading a few of their lyrics, I quickly came to realize the wardrobe concept behind VentanA (at least from what I recevied). We live in a toxic, polluted world. Taking up everyday issues that seem negative in our lives, VentanA seems to expose the bullshit providing light and turning it into a positive position. This was my first VentanA fix. I got wind of the band from a bartender in Cleveland who shared their newest album with me. Found out, he was their guitar player. I reached out and he set me up with a photo pass to shoot 13th Anniversary show. Thanks, Tommy!

Photo Review: Flight 619 @ The Empire Concert Club & Bar

June 29, 2017

It's been 8 months since Flight 619 performed together on stage as a band. The group has been busy making a few mechanical adjustments to their lineup and while doing so, actively preparing for their full-length CD which is expected to drop later this year. Stay tuned, because the artwork is being done by myself and excited to unveil it upon release.

Friday night, Flight 619 sold out the Empire and for two good reasons. One, I know a lot of their Akron fans were anticipating their return to the stage. Two, the Empire Concert Club & Bar celebrated their 3-year anniversary as the best small venue to play at in the Akron area. That last part is purely my assessment. But seriously, the Empire is a fantastic, intimate venue to play at if you're a local band or an observer. The stage setup is the Rolls Royce. A shit load of flashy lights to create an aura, fog machines to make any band look epicly bad ass, and an amazing sound board with knowledgeable sound techs to give you the best output. Did I forget to mention they have guitar mounts on stage?!

The original lineup of Flight 619 still consists of founding vocalist, Dakota Wilkinson and Dylan Roth on drums. Mark Matthews is back on the low-end of the sound where Dave Rudolph is the newest addition hammering chords on lead guitar. For the band not playing for some time, you'd expect hiccups and rusty gears in the engine, but when you're Flight 619, you always follow through with your pre-flight checklist to make sure all elements are in full working order. The band unveiled two brand new songs never played live. "Dying Daze" and "My Gardenia" are two powerful songs backed with killer guitar harmonies that are sure to be ballads on the album.

Dave Rudolph - Flight 619's newest addition on lead guitars

Thanks to the whole staff of Flight 619 for having me out. It was really nice to see a lot of familiar faces and felt like a big ole family again. Go check the band out on Facebook and make sure to give them a "like".

Photo Review: Saliva, The Everyday Losers and Devilstrip @ House of Blues

June 22, 2017

It was time to spit out that work week tastes outta my mouth and refresh it with a solid rock show at the House of Blues last Friday night. Devilstrip, Akron's popular rock trio opened the evening playing popular hits such as "Kill the Headlights" and introducing a few new tracks off their upcoming album, "Testify", which releases next month on Broken Road Records. Feelin' some Akron pride for Devilstrip with all the familiar faces that showed up and rockin' the bands' new threads.

The Everyday Losers, a hard-rock band out of Washington, Indiana, followed Devilstrip with a little more intensity and spunk in their step. With their distinct hard-rock sound, the band also complemented it with an alternative, grunge harmony accompanied by Dylan Seidel on guitar and vocals.

It's been a year since seeing Saliva, but I welcomed their subsequent return from Ink in the Clink. Bobby Amaru is a great frontman. Working the crowd, interacting with them, and making all of us part of the show. He even dedicated the song "Rest in Pieces" to the late Chris Cornell. The volume got turned up a bit mid-set when the audience opened the middle for a little moshing. Ahh yes, love seeing people let loose and those bodies tossed around like rag dolls.

Saliva Setlist:
1. Superstar
2. Ladies and Gentlemen
3. Survival of the Sickest
4. Trust
5. After Me
6. Rest in Pieces
7. Doperide
8. Always
9. T.N.T. (AC/DC cover)
10. Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin cover)(Snippet)
11. Click, Click, Boom
12. Your Disease

I need to send out a special thank you to Graig and the whole band of Devilstrip for inviting me out and letting me deliver some great shots that evening. The new album sounds great and looking forward to its release!

Artist Spotlight: Kyle Thomas

May 11, 2017

It's been a busy month for me. And love it even more, I get to work with talented artists like this young musician that goes by Kyle Thomas. This isn't my first time working with Kyle. Last July, he hired me to shoot his live show at the Dusty Armadillo, and you can say that was the first time getting my feet wet in the world of country music.

Kyle certainly has a strong country sound and shows creativeness and heart when writing music. As a young musician, he's still trying to find himself visually. He came to me with a few ideas in mind but wasn't too set on having a stable country look like what other artists may be representing. With my schedule a little crazy, I decided to take this photo shoot locally into beautiful Hartville, Ohio. Hartville holds a lot of country beauty that would fit Kyle, but at has options to provide more of an industrial feel downtown towards the square.

On my drive into town, I spotted this old abandoned shed off the side of the road by Maize Valley Winery & Craft Brewery on Edison Street. It had a potential for a rugged look and that's where we began first. We played with shooting Kyle from outside and inside of the shred's window. We worked the grounds of the area, finding a grungy trailer and weathered corridor. Heading into downtown, we mixed it up and photographed Kyle in between two semi trailers. I loved the leading lines in the scene. After we had exhausted that spot, the sound of an incoming trailer "choo-choo'd" our next location. Snapped a few photos with the train passing by and decided to place a light stand for a real moody approach. I figure I cover all grounds for Kyle making sure he had a little bit of everything to play around with.

Little direction on my part giving Kyle a strong male presence as the kid had it down. He was mixing up different stances after each fire from the camera. Thank you, Kyle, for the great turnout! I had a blast working with you again.

Photo Review: Elantris, Hammerfall and Delain (Agora Theatre)

May 02, 2017

I got back into my comfy shoes and received my dose of metal when Europeans, Hammerfall and Delain co-headlined the Agora Theatre last Thursday. The biggest treat I've been waiting for was seeing Elantris (formally Blackthorne) perform for the first time. Back in early March, Elantris hired me to photograph their promos for their upcoming tour later this year with Epica and Lacuna Coil. The show was originally slated to be in the Ballroom, but when I heard they were moving it to the Theatre, I got overly excited.  Now I could capture more professional shots and avoid being bopped around in the crowd. And when things couldn't get better, I found myself with a photo pit all to myself! Elbow room and all. Below is my full photo review from that night.

Photo Review: State Champs @ Agora Theater

April 11, 2017

My girlfriend told me about this concert she was attending and informed I need to shoot this show. The word "concert" immediately perked my ear so I instantly thought, "what metal act is coming to Cleveland that I don't know about with Rock on the Range just a month away?" Well, it wasn't metal, hell, it wasn't even considered hard rock but in fact, pop-punk. State Champs, a band from New York played the Agora last Friday night. Okay, they weren't my sound but whoa, they were a lot of fun and dynamically energetic to watch. And the stage lighting was killer! I love being diverse on what I shoot. I not only get a new sound and energy, but I get to soak up a new crowd experience along the way. I saw crowd surfers, jumpers, even a cute mosh pit. Props to those millennials for jammin' out a fun night! Here are some of my shots from their set.

Setlist

2. Losing Myself
3. Shape Up
4. Eyes Closed

It didn't take very long to get the fire ignited when Columbus natives, Dread Engine opened last Saturday night's show at the Whiskey Warehouse in Mansfield, Ohio. The last time I saw Dread Engine, it was back in July at Ink in the Clink. They certainly left my ears wanting more. So when I finally heard on social media that they were coming "somewhat" close to my neck of the ends, I seized the opportunity to see them.

Now with a few different band members replaced and the upcoming release of their CD next month, the work has paid off. The "Engine" never felt cleaner and roared with a sound that leaves your chest echoing with a heavier vibration of pure power! Not that it wasn't before, but the new stuff played that evening really left a fire burning in my stomach wanting much more. I was hoping their set would last a little longer with only three bands on the bill. Their next big show on Saturday, April 8 at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus can't come soon enough. Go see it. My recommendations doesn't come higher than this...YOU WON'T BE DISSIPOINTED. I'm putting my stamp of approval on it!

Here are some shots from their set that night.
